Urgggh migraines suck!! Have you done one of those migraine diarys Kell.......food/drink related.......in case you've developed a sensitivity to something you're eating

Friend of mine has found accupuncture has helped the most.........more effective than the myriad of pills she's been trying for years.
I only can repeat sue's suggestion: accupuncture...
It really works! My therapist also gave me chinese herbs for it, to help the accupuncture sessions but I couldn't take them without invoking a migraine attack due to the smell of them... So I never took them :D But the sessions were sufficient to keep the migraine away...
I even take my little girl to that therapist, not for the accupuncture, but she also gives pressure-point-massages. I found it helps my daughter more than any coughsirope when she has bronchitis (I always go first to a doctor, but when I'm certain it's nothing else we're going for the masage) The next day, her coughing is 50% better and gone within 3 days while with "classic" prescriptions it takes 1 or 2 weeks... And my daughter loves to go, she really enjoys the massages :D
I think I have had one migraine in my life and all I could do was take some Naproxen and go to bed. I would do what madtwinsis suggested.
I find it odd that Excedrine would work. With all the caffeine, you would think it would make your headache worse.
Caffeine is a mirgraine sufferer's best friend and worst enemy. It often "cures" a migraine, but going cold turkey will bring one on like a freight train. A migraine, if I recall correctly, is when the blood vessels are dilated too much (caused by all manner of things), and are often triggered by environmental, hormonal, and chemical changes. Getting smashed just before your period during high pressure weather might well kill you if those are your triggers. :)

I've found balanced eating, getting enough sleep no.matter.what (so extra sleep the day before my period sort of thing), staying hydrated, and not over doing exercise and yoga (don't over-stimulate the nervous system) keeps the rotten things at bay, or weakens them. Sometimes it's no use, I just need to sleep it off, though. If I don't, I end up nauseated and green from the pain. I'm very lucky that I don't have light-sensitivity, however, I do get diamonds on the edges of my vision, and then things get darker and darker and I find myself turning on more and more lights trying to see before I realize I have a migraine. The pain comes shortly after that, but it's not light related, just a bomb behind my eye like a buzz saw through my skull.

So, um, yeah. {{hugs}} Migraines suck.
I only get occular migraines and rarely get the pain. I just have a lighting flash area of blindness across my vision that lasts 3 or 4 hours, then I'm Okay...unless I'm driving when they hit. The doc says that's the migraine aura, and that you can have migraines without any pain at all because it has to do with the blood flow putting pressure on nerves. He even had one guy in the hospital paralyzed for a week before they realized it was a migraine. The guy's head felt fine. Migraines are weird buggars.

I get really bad headaches that knock me flat and start with pressure at the top of my head, but they turned out to be sinus related. It's weird because I don't get a stuffy nose or anything. If I catch it soon enough, some Sinus Tylenol does the trick. I've been able to cut them down drastically by using one of those sinus lavage pots. Again, it's weird because I'm not sneezing or anything, I just end up with pain behind the eyes and the urge to put a gun to my head.

Whatever it is, take good care of yourself. If it hurts, it hurts.
Oh man I never thought of sinus issues, I might have to ask my doctor about that. I occassionally get the twinkles like Suzanne was mentioning, that's like at the very beginning before they knock me out. When I get the white blinding flash though that is usually on my way to the bed and it is accompanied by horrible pain. Like someone just laid a cast iron fry pan over my noggin... with supreme force.

I think when I go back to the doctor I am going to ask about the possibility of a sinus issue. The pain I can pinpoint because I have a mild one right now, it has been struggling to take over the day. Right behind the eyes at the top of the head.

Blasted things SUCK!
Do men get migraines or is this something that is more common in us womenfolk?
Oh and I need to thank everyone who has been coming and posting their experiences with these damn things. You are awesome :)

If you want a natural approach, you could try some feverfew tea. It's the most foul smelling/tasting thing ever but after a 2 day migraine, I finally gave in and took some - 20 minutes later, it was gone.

I grow some feverfew in a pot (it spreads easily), just take 1 or 2 leaves, roughly chop it and add water just off the boil. Leave it for a few minutes to steep and to cool then hold your nose and drink it down. In the UK, we can get feverfew tablets but they are not so effective.

First off, I am not a doctor. Sometimes I'm not even sure I'm much of a photographer. But here's some ideas you might try that can't possibly hurt you and they don't taste disgusting. My mother would sometimes get bad headaches, though I'm not sure they were technically migraines. Eventually her doctor suggested she try eliminating some things from her diet and it seemed to help her out.

1. Caffeine. Some pain relievers like regular Excedrin contain caffeine so make sure you read the label. 2. Red wines. 3. Aged cheeses. So I guess Velveeta and mac 'n cheese are still OK. 4. Raw onions. Cooking them apparently makes them harmless, except maybe to your breath. 5. Chocolate. This might be a tough one, but I have had the occasional "chocolate headache" myself.

If any of this helps you out you can send me a Peeball.
